Largo Luis de Camões

The current toponym dates from 1911. However, “Terreiro da Porta Nova” remains in the collective memory, a toponymic heritage of a millennium old gate that would have been part of the primitive surrounding walls of Évora. It was also from this old “Terreiro” (public square), recognised since the 14th century, that several arteries were constructed between the old urban nucleus, of Roman origin, to the new medieval centres, with particular emphasis on the axes of Rua de Avis and Rua Cândido dos Reis. The configuration of the Largo was substantially different until the mid-16th century, as the main potteries of Évora were located here, which mediated its urban and commercial importance until the end of the 15th century. The regularisation of its design came about with the construction of the Água da Prata Aqueduct in 1536 and this Largo da Porta Nova was the original location of the fountain that we admire today in Largo de Avis.
