Praça do Sertório

In the first half of the 16th century, Évora needed to remove the sale of fish from Praça Grande. Choosing the location was a long and complex process, having dragged on for almost 4 decades. It is in 1539 that the process was completed, establishing the site in a “newly created” square, the result of the levelling of a public space delineated for the passage of the Água da Prata Aqueduct. Therefore, this space was called “Praça do Peixe”, a name that remained until 1869. With the construction of the Municipal Market in Largo 1° de Maio, in the last quarter of the 19th century, this square adopted the name it still retains today: Praça de Sertório, a place name distilled from the myth that the dissident Roman general built his palace here in the 1st century BC. The transition was definitively concluded when, on April 6, 1883, the final memory of the old Praça do Peixe was sold: the fish storehouse. At the same time, the Municipality contracted a vast loan for the purpose of acquiring a building that would serve as the “new” City Council, choosing the former Palace of the Condes de Sortelha, which served as accommodation for a military regiment, attached to the remains of the Convento do Salvador.
