Rua Conde da Serra da Tourega

Estevão António Tormenta Pinheiro, knight of the Royal House, born in Évora in 1856, died in Lisbon in 1911. He was one of the most respected representatives of the Nation, a position he held from 1898. He was the 1st Count of Serra da Tourega and one of the most renowned Mayors of Évora in the 19th century, having left a vast work of urban improvement during his mandates. The current street layout pays him a well-deserved tribute, which the municipality bestowed on him during his lifetime, in 1894, the year in which the current place name replaced those that this axis had since the mid-16th century, and are directly linked to the construction of the Colégio do Espírito Santo and Évora University. “Carreira dos Estudantes”, “Carreira do Colégio”, “Rua do Colégio”, were some of the place names that crossed the centuries and that attest to the urban importance of this street in the context of the city from the formation of Portugal’s second University.
