Rua da República

This street was the connexion between Porta do Rossio and Praça Grande, today Praça de Giraldo. The current toponym, established in 1910, replaces the one by which this axis was known since the mid-16th century and which consecrates one of the most important streets in 16th-century Évora: Rua do Paço. This is the surrounds of the royal complex, annexed to the Convent of São Francisco from the second half of the 14th century and which consisted of one of the most important royal residences in the Kingdom of Portugal. The urbanisation of its surroundings also resulted from the constant presence of the sovereign, with some of the most relevant examples of civil palatial architecture in the city having been implanted in its vicinity, including the last great palace built in Évora: the Barahona Palace.
