Rua do Menino Jesus

At the end of the 15th century, references to “Alcárcova dos Mouros” persist in the documentation, which seems to indicate an urban division. In fact, Évora still retains the place name in some areas today, which translates to the filling of the ditch in the walls to adapt them to streets. The “alcárcova” in this area infers a proximity to Mouraria Nova, which occupied part of the northern slope of the city from 1340 onward, constituting, for many centuries, a marginal area, but not without a unique dynamism, of medieval Évora. Embedded between two of the city’s main streets, Rua de Avis and Rua das Fontes, Mouraria accommodated a lively and dynamic community that bequeathed countless legacies to the urban toponymy. This ‘alcárcova’ made street, through which the mosque of the Moorish quarter was accessed, assumed its name at the end of the 16th century as “Carreira do Menino Jesus” (a name with an obvious Christianising function), connecting Largo da Porta Nova (formerly Largo Luís de Camões) to Terreiro do Convento de Santa Mónica.
