Rua João de Deus

“Rua Direita that goes from Praça to Porta Nova”. This is the oldest designation of the current street. This is how the current Rua João de Deus was defined until 1473, a symptom of the growth of the city after the end of the 13th century, when the outskirts began to be defined around the old walls. However, the description “direita” does not translate into straight line. Indeed, it symbolises its importance as a commercial artery and as an urban link. From the last quarter of the 15th century, it starts to be called “Rua Ancha”, which translates as “wide”, but retaining its importance in the socio-commercial context of late-medieval Évora. It connected Praça Grande with the pottery area, which were located in Largo da Porta Nova (current Largo Luís de Camões), constituting with the current Rua 5 de Outubro, the main commercial axes of Évora, in a memorial legacy that has been preserved until the current day. The current name was finalised in the 19th century, as a tribute to the poet and pedagogue João de Deus de Nogueira Ramos.
