Rua Miguel Bombarda

The “Muro quebrado” (broken wall) is a place name that appeared in the 14th century, when a new belt of walls deactivated the ones that protected the city for many centuries. This first wall provided raw material for the “new constructions”, thus appearing “broken” in some sections of which we have been left a record.

One of these places is next to the current Church of São Vicente, an area of rapid medieval expansion, from which the old Rua dos Infantes flows, named for the brothers of Cardinal D. Afonso of Portugal who lived here. As in many Portuguese cities, old place names of monarchical praise were replaced in 1910 by names exalting figures related to the 1st Republic, hence the current name of Miguel Bombarda. It is ironic that remarkable vestiges of the palace of Mendes de Vasconcelos, lords of the Herdade do Esporão and members of the highest nobility of the Kingdom of Portugal between the 15th and 17th centuries, are preserved here.
