Rua Cândido dos Reis

In the local collective memory, place names of a notorious past persist. Rua Cândido dos Reis, so called since 1910, is a street of secular origin and even today is more easily recognised by its original designation from 1331: Rua da Lagoa. Water, as a natural element, appears in the toponymy of practically all Portuguese locations and, in the case of Évora and this street in particular, it is directly related to the existence of a natural reservoir, located nearby. This “lagoon” persisted in the urban context until roughly the mid-16th century, when the rise of buildings, in particular the construction of the great Paço dos Sepúlvedas and the Convento do Calvário, led to a more consistent housing settlement, defining new arteries and giving greater importance to the Gate of the old wall that opened onto the road to Arraiolos and Montemor-o-Novo. However, a single event immortalised this city entrance in the history of Evora: it was here that the royal entourage of the Catholic Monarchs entered in 1490, for the wedding of their eldest daughter, Isabel of Aragon, with the infante D. Afonso, firstborn of D. João II.
