Largo Álvaro Velho

The place name of this small square may go unnoticed. However, and far beyond the simple urban tranquillity and ease that its current configuration draws, the figure of Álvaro Velho stands out. Born in Lisbon, but of Flemish origin, he was a squire to King Manuel and one of the loyal confidants of Vasco da Gama, who accompanied him in the discovery of the maritime route to India and on which it is believed that he wrote a famous sailing guide, discovered and printed in Porto in 1838. Álvaro Velho resided in Évora and was, between 1502 and 1509, overseer and recipient of the imposing reform work of the Convent of S. Francisco and Paço Real in the city. The Largo that honours his memory has had the same name since 1536.
