Uma peça sobre a figura histórica do general Gomes Freire, condenado à morte em 1817, nos últimos estertores do regime absolutista.

Publicado em 1961, o texto de Luís de Sttau Monteiro era uma metáfora tão evidente do Estado Novo sacudido pelas eleições de 1958, que até os obtusos censores salazaristas a perceberam.

Proibida, a peça só pôde ser representada em Portugal depois da revolução.
